If Three Houses taught me anything, picking a lousy route (looking at you, Silver Snow) really can make a big difference in the final impact of a game that features multiple paths. It works firstly as an educational tool for the little ones, as they come to terms with the idea of adding one and one together, or adding 1 and 5 to make 6. I enjoyed this system as it made experimenting with different characters and different classes feel worthwhile. Characters are also differentiated by the combat arts, spells, and abilities they unlock in their classes, giving them different elemental preferences or different unit types they have an advantage against. My imagination did more to engage me than the actuality of the creatures, and that’s not necessarily a failing of Beyond Blue.

Both were played on normal difficulty in casual mode (no permadeath), with one run being a new game+ playthrough. Rolling a 6 and a 1 and catching whole Flounders from right under my nose really gets him going and I can see why.
